Nice but.... not exactly top of the pack
I bought this in the hopes that it would be a great place to store backups (etc) for my Mac and Windows PCs. So far I am less than thrilled with the unit. I have two main gripes:
It doesn't work with my Mac running Snow Leopard. I can see the share points but I cannot do an AFP mount. Searching the internet, I found that several NAS manufacturers have the same problem with Snow Leopard. The solution in each case (Netgear ReadyNAS, etc) is to download and install new firmware. However, when you try to go to the LG website you'll run into problems. Put simply, the site is terrible. They don't even have a placeholder for firmware in the N2R1 product page! :-( I can only assume that no new version of the firmware is available, which is unacceptable. Snow Leopard has been out for awhile and it shouldn't be this hard to find a firmware file, even if it is an old one (at least then I'd know I had the most recent version).
The second problem is that the hard disks never seem to sleep. In fairness, however, I have spent the majority of my time trying to figure out the Mac problem not researching the power settings. However, in my cursory checks, I don't see a setting for getting the drives to power down and sleep after a period of inactivity. As a side note, I also do not see anything that states, or implies, that the NAS has Wake-On-Lan, which would be very nice feature to have.
For these reasons I would suggest looking a little further for a suitable NAS. The Mac problem will, I assume, be fixed. But the poor website makes me question LG's commitment to the drive. The power-down mode and Wake-On-Lan have me more worried. — Atomic Bomb Builders & Assoc.
